Updated: Feb 20, 2024

Looking for somewhere different to go on holiday in 2024? Why not try a wildlife destination? Discover some of the best places to see wildlife around the world.

When planning a holiday, there are many exciting possibilities for exploring the natural world and its flora and fauna. From snorkeling around coral reefs to trekking through jungles in search of exotic species, natural beauty is not hard to find. Here are some of the best places to visit and witness firsthand the spectacular diversity of the planet's wildlife.

The Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands, located 600 miles off the coast of South America, is a dream destination for wildlife lovers. It's here that Charles Darwin and his studies of the unique animal species formed the basis of his theory of evolution. Tour companies offer day trips as well as extended treks across multiple islands. Wildlife sightings include giant tortoises, sea lions, marine iguanas, and a variety of tropical birds.

Kruger National Park - South Africa

Kruger National Park in South Africa covers an area of two million hectares and is home to a wide variety of mammals, reptiles, birds, and insects. It’s one of the best places in the world to view a lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, cheetah, buffalo and other African wildlife. Hiking trails, safaris, and luxury lodges provide visitors with plenty of opportunities to experience the park. Kruger is also home to various cultural and archaeological sites, such as ancient rock art and cave sites, that tell the story of the area's history.

Peru

Peru is a superb option for a wildlife vacation. Home to the Amazon Rainforest and the Andes Mountain range, Peru boasts some of the most diverse and awe-inspiring wildlife on the continent. From impressively large birds, such as the Andean Condor and macaws, to small monkeys and manatees, Peru has something for every budding wildlife enthusiast. In particular, the Manu Biosphere Reserve, which is home to over 1000 species of birds, is one of the best places to catch a glimpse of the country’s extraordinary wildlife.

Borneo

Visiting Borneo is an incredible opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the world's most amazing wildlife, including the black-furred sun bear - the smallest of all bear species. Other star animals are the orangutans native to this part of Southeast Asia. Taking a tour that includes a visit to the Sepilok

Rehabilitation Centre can be especially rewarding; this center is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating critically endangered Orangutans who are only found in Borneo and Sumatra rainforests. You may even spot some baby Orangutans playing in the trees!

Mont Tremblant National Park - Canada

Mont Tremblant National Park is a popular summer destination - visitors may come across various wildlife such as moose, white-tailed deer, black bear, beaver, eastern wolf, red fox, and red squirrels. Of particular importance to the park's ecological balance is the wolf. Birdwatchers can also take delight in encountering 206 different bird species in the area.

Corcovado National Park - Costa Rica

The stunning biodiversity of Corcovado National Park, located in the southwest corner of Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula, is simply breathtaking. Its vast array of ecosystems - from old-growth wet forests to cloud forests and mangrove swamps - plays host to an incredible assortment of wildlife, from red macaws and tapirs to boa constrictors and various species of monkeys. You'll likely feel quite lucky if you spot a mountain lion or jaguar hunting for turtles on the beach; however, be alert for herds of aggressive peccaries as you explore the park's dark jungle.
